Walking the Coast to Coast in UK, we encountered plenty of sheep, so many sheep that I wanted to make a Powerpoint presentation exclusively of photos of sheep. Some were curious, others cautious, some disturbed by our presence and others seemed not interested in us at all.
Cattle may seem intimidating if they come towards you. Curious and usually friendly but you’re not allowed to approach animals in UK under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000, the ‘right to roam’ or ‘freedom to roam’. If animals are on the ramblers’ path, you’re permitted to go off the path to keep safe and to give the animals space. In fact, that’s the only time you’re permitted off the path.
Sheep look at us and we wonder what they’re thinking. We’re not the centre of their attention. Ego dissolves. Any walk can be about the natural surroundings as we lose our thoughts of our work, our problems, ourselves. Walking can take us away from an anthropomorphic view of the world and that gives our minds a rest.
