Walking above the forest, lifeless skeletons of trees in Wilsons Prom stand strongly between our track and thick green forest. It’s November, summer, fire season. What weather will this summer bring? What precautions have we taken to prepare for potential fire danger? I’ve never really been certain of what to do if you’re along a track near blazing fire. It sounds simple to walk out of danger, away from fire but fire moves with the wind and winds change quickly. It sounds simple to hear a message on your phone but we’re not always in range. It sounds simple to know that there’s fire nearby when you look at a stunning view like this view but I’ve been in forest, dark and wooded, turned a corner and seen thick urgent smoke. For now, let’s enjoy the beauty of steel grey and blackened trunks reaching up from buried corms of living roots grasping the sand as living trees do.
