Walking on a tollway

Walking past a sign from yesteryear shows that we’re on a tollway. Walkers may pass here for free but, in the day, motorcars with three wheels were charged a pound to progress along this road. We can’t even imagine a motorcar with three wheels. In 1948, a horse-drawn carriage with two wheels or four wheels was taxed fourpence or eight pennies. Or is that four shillings or eight shillings? What could you buy for four shillings in 1948? Much to ponder. We begin to imagine from movies rather than real experience. Yet it’s our real experience today to walk past this sign on this old stone building. I smell sweet peas and realise that I planted exactly that variety this year; Matucana I think.
