Walking in summer

Walking in summer, a slight breeze and clear sky seem perfect weather. But the first day on Tasmania’s Overland Track is exposed and hot. Barely space for two people to stand in shade anywhere. We all slap on sunscreen and often. My long-sleeved collared shirt protects my arms and the back of my neck. My wide-brimmed hat, though neither glamorous nor trendy, shields my face and ears more than a cap. It’s a few days before I notice sunburn glowing red on fellow walkers. Skin peeling painfully. It’s too late to help them.

Swimming in Lake Will and again in Lake Windermere on the second day was a delightful way to wash my sweaty shirt. Lazing in the freezing cold water refreshed body, mind and spirit.
